What is VITA?
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is an IRS program that provides free tax preparation services to people with disabilities, low income, or limited English proficiency. Volunteers receive training for IRS certification in the preparation and electronic filing of basic income tax returns. Learn more about the program at the IRS website.
Over the last few years, our members have participated in the VITA program through the International Rescue Committee in San Diego, helping the San Diego community save millions of dollars in tax refunds. VITA volunteers at the two IRC sites helped return almost $4.4 million in refunds throughout the 2015 tax season alone. The program is not just beneficial to its tax clients; volunteers receive training in filing tax returns using VITA's tax software platform. Volunteering in VITA is a great way to familiarize yourself with income tax preparation, make meaningful connections with peers and community members, and boost your professionalism.
Applications for VITA 2016 ARE OVER; check back again next fall to participate in this fantastic hands-on program.
